Make exercise cool for kids - PUNCH

As a parent, there are ways you can help overweight kids find activities they’ll enjoy and can do at their own pace. With your encouragement and support, you and your child can start moving more together. Here’s how.
Build Confidence
Studies show that kids who feel more confident about their ability to be physically active are more likely to exercise. Try boosting your child’s confidence with these tips.
Make kids’ exercise easy to master. “All kids want to feel competent and self-efficient in any activity they do,” says Jackie Epping, MEd, a physical education expert at the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity at the CDC. For a start, “choose exercises that don’t take a lot of extra coordination and skill. Brisk walking, bicycling, and swimming are all good options.”
Take it slow. While health experts recommend that kids get 60 minutes of exercise a day, that can be a lot for a kid who hasn’t been active.
“Start with just five to 10 minutes of play,” says Laura Alderman, MEd, an exercise physiologist and wellness coach at Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D. “For example, throw a Frisbee or play volleyball for just a few minutes and then stop when the time is up. The idea is to show kids that moving can be fun and to leave them craving more.”
Avoid elimination games. Some games, such as dodgeball, make it too easy to be eliminated from play. “These kinds of games can make an overweight child feel self-conscious,” says Epping. “And then the child sits out for the rest of the game and doesn’t get any exercise.”

Suprising ways to loose weight - PUNCH

Hit the dance floor
Get into the groove by dancing for 20 minutes at a moderate pace. For an added kick, choose up-tempo music—you’ll get your heart racing without even realizing it.
The great outdoors
Give your flower beds some love and burn off last night’s dessert by gardening for 30 minutes. Weeding and planting seeds are particularly good ways to break a sweat.
Head outside
After the pretty leaves of autumn have fallen, tidy up the lawn by spending 40 minutes raking them up. Once you’re done, bag the piles and bring them to the curb for extra strength training.
Shop till you drop
Forget lightening your wallet! Instead, apply the principle to your waistline by window shopping for 30 minutes. Of course, you could add in a little strength training, by carrying a few recent purchases around.
Satisfy your belly
Your tummy will benefit in more ways than one when you spend 40 minutes in the kitchen preparing a homemade meal. If you really want to work those arms, try some labor-intensive prep work like kneading dough, whipping cream or grinding spices with a mortar and pestle.

Nestle MD stresses importance of quality water

Authorities of Nestle Nigeria Plc have warned Nigerians against the consumption of suspicious water, especially the water that is deficient in Zinc.
Managing Director/Chief Executive of Nestle, Mr. Dharnesh Gordon, gave the advice at the public presentation of the Nestle Pure Life Protect in Lagos.
Explaining some of the efforts by the company in making quality water available to Nigerians, Gordon said only clean water would aid healthy living.
He said, “We work to achieve efficiency across our operations by excelling in the reduction of direct water use in all our facilities.
“Also, we advocate effective water policies and stewardship by promoting public policies that place value on water at every level.
“It is important to treat effectively the water being discharged, by setting targets for returning clean water to the environment; and engaging with suppliers, especially those in agriculture, by helping to improve their water management, with focus on impacts at watershed level.”
Gordon said Nestle, as a socially responsible company, “raises awareness about water access and conservation by engaging employees, communities and consumers in the water imperative.”
He recommended putting risk assessments in place to safeguard sources of water against any potential risks.
“We believe strongly that good hydration is at the heart of a healthy lifestyle. We also believe that when it comes to hydration, bottled water is the healthiest packaged beverage, due to its absence of calories, its controlled origin, its outstanding quality, its taste and convenience,” he added.
Country Business Manager of the company, Mr. Adewale Ojo, added that the organisation had carried out proper research before producing the Pure Life Protect water brand.

Ask the doctor - PUNCH

Doctors stethoscope
Hello doctor. What are the over the counter measures and drugs to treat herpes here in Nigeria? Please I need urgent answers. Thank you and God bless you.     0814398xxxx
I am not aware of any over the counter measures designed to treat herpes. You need to have a diagnosis which only your doctor can provide for you. After that is done, you can then have treatment.
Hello doctor. I am a 45-year-old woman. I have been having an itching sensation on my left breast for some months now. Though there is no lump, I am worried.    0805646xxxx
Itching in the breast does not signify an ailment. Pain does, no matter how slight as long as it appears to be persistent. I would advise that you see your doctor for a physical examination and any relevant investigations he deems fit so as to allay your fears.
Good day doctor, I have a 14-year-old son in SS1 who still pees when he is asleep. All efforts to stop him have been futile. Please what can I do? 0803516xxxx
Please do not give up on your son. He will probably stop on his own suddenly, but I cannot tell you when that will be. As a result of that, I will say you should give him some medications meant for that purpose, it is called Imipramine. He can use 25mg every night for four weeks and let us evaluate his response to it.
Good day sir. I am a 35-year-old with a 13-year-old son. I have been trying to get pregnant for some time now but I have irregular periods. It does not flow normally and it is not more than two days. I was told it is hormonal imbalance. Please what drugs can I take to correct this so that I can get pregnant soon?  Thank you very much. Worried lady     0810736xxxx
The pattern of your cycle may indeed be indicative of irregular cycles. When you have such a problem, it is always better to conduct a hormone profile to identify the particular hormone or hormones that is/are responsible so that you can be given targeted treatment which should work. As you get older, these problems become more difficult to treat so do this test quickly as your doctor directs you to do.
Good day doctor, I read your column about “Being One’s Enemy’ in SUNDAY PUNCH. It is an expert advice and tips on how to take reasonable decisions at the right time. Thanks.    0807724xxxx
Thank you very much. Healthy living and the strategies for doing so are what this column hopes to empower people with.
Good day, sir. I always enjoy your column in SUNDAY PUNCH. Thanks for the enlightenment. Please I had a lump removed from my left breast in February but I still feel some pains till now and the scan revealed that the lump was not cancerous. Sometimes I feel pain in the left shoulder and breast. I have complained to my doctor and he says it is normal, that the place is still healing. Please is it normal to still feel pain eight months after an operation?  0815701xxxx
Pain after an operation depends on the type of operation done and the site of the operation. So, pain can occur after eight months, but it is not usual. What I assume is that your doctor conducted a histopathology test on the tissue he removed from your breast rather than a scan and if you remain uncomfortable, you can seek a second opinion from another doctor. That you feel pains in both the shoulder and breast demands some further examination and it would be better if you do that soon.
Good day, doctor. I’d like to know what type of drug should be used if a person has a toilet disease? Please reply. God bless you.   0813002xxxx
We have discussed this topic before in an earlier edition and said then that infections which are called “toilet diseases or toilet infections” have nothing actually to do with the toilet. So we cannot recommend any drug for you based on an assumption. You will need to have a swab taken in the vagina and the discharge obtained cultured in a lab. When you do so, the particular drug that can treat your ailment will be obvious.
Doctor, I just read your column today “Ask the doctor”. Please what has camphor got to do with jaundice in babies and how do babies contract it?  inaadetan@xxx.com
It is one of those quirks of nature. Camphor is basically a white flammable compound that has a strong aromatic odour. That means it has a complex carbon chain. It has a wide variety of actions on the body. In small doses, it causes a rapid heartbeat, reduced appetite, dilatation of the vessels of the skin making people look pale, slower breathing, increased secretions in the mouth and increased excretion such as sweating and urination. In larger doses, it is actually poisonous. It causes muscle spasms, irritability, lethargy, vomiting, abdominal cramps, convulsions and even seizures. In the newborn, because their skin is so supple, camphor is easily absorbed through that skin and taken up into the system where it attacks the wall of the red blood cells, causing them damage and early death in large numbers. This is most pronounced in children who have G6PD deficiency, an enzyme which is supposed to make the red blood cells resist injury. The effect of all this is jaundice which can cross into the brain and poison it, thus causing a moron to develop or death. Other ways in which a newborn might contract jaundice was discussed in the SUNDAY PUNCH edition of 22/09/2013
Good day, doctor, I am 20 years old now and my penis is not enlarging as it is still the same as it was when I was 15 years of age. I need a drug for penis enlargement.    makindeb@xxx.com
Was the penis small at 15 years? Have you yourself increased in size since then? You have to see a urologist for a proper assessment. Although you have not given us any figures here about the size of your penis, it is important to know if it is an abnormally small size or not. Now if you have already attained a large penile size at age 15 years, your body might have decided that any further significant increase is of no use to you and so it could have denied you of that extra. I do not know of any drugs that can enlarge your penis at your age.

Impotence is not a death sentence

Impotence is not a death sentence
The ageing process is a curious one for many reasons, especially because it comes with a barrage of health issues that need to be confronted headlong as the biological clock ticks on.
In addition to other issues that accompany old age, experts say, erectile dysfunction happens to be another challenge that men — and, by implication, their partners — have to contend with.
Although opinions differ as to whether erectile dysfunction is unavoidable natural fallout of ageing, the fact still remains that it happens, especially as men cross the threshold of age 50.
Indeed, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, United State of America approximately five per cent of 40-year-old men and between 15 to 25 per  cent of 65-year-old men experience erectile dysfunction.
This being the case, for men who are still able to hold their own sexually, we say bravo. However, for those who have noticed that their sexual prowess has diminished remarkably, physicians say there is hope.
What is erectile dysfunction?
Physicians describe erectile dysfunction — otherwise called impotence — as a medical condition in which the erection of the penis is not of sufficient quality for the certain interval of time required to have normal, full sexual intercourse. When erectile dysfunction occurs, doctors say, a man cannot fully satisfy both himself and his partner.
Worse still, experts in human anatomy warn that impotence could be a sign of other health problems, as it may mean that your blood vessels are clogged. They also advise that it may mean that you have nerve damage from diabetes.
In any or all of these cases, experts say, if you don’t see your doctor, the problems will go untreated and may worsen. “The most common problems related to sexual dysfunction in men include ejaculation disorders, erectile dysfunction and inhibited sexual desire,” physicians say.
Causes of ED
Experts contend that most men experience impotence during their sexual life; but they recommend seeking professional help when the problem becomes persistent.
Scientists say there are many reasons why men experience erectile dysfunction. Drug abuse is one of them.
General Practitioner, Dr. Hakeem Olajire, warns people that taking drugs — including the common pain killers — that are not prescribed by doctors over a period of time could lead to erectile dysfunction, among other side effects.
He notes that individual reactions to drug intake vary, and that some antidepressants and other psychiatric medications could lead to erectile dysfunction over time, hence the need to take all drugs under the supervision of a competent physician.
Drug-induced impotence
Olajire adds that other classes of drugs that may lead to ED include high blood pressure medicines and diuretics (drugs that make you urinate more), Parkinson’s disease medications, and recreational drugs such as alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, marijuana, heroin and nicotine.
According to a research published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, certain drugs that are used to treat male pattern hair loss and enlarged prostate may also produce side effects such as impotence and loss of libido in some men.
“These drugs work by reducing the amount of dihydrotestosterone circulating in the blood,” a surgeon and ED expert at the University of Maryland Medical Centre, Dr. Andrew Kramer, warns.
Dihydrotestosterone is the male sex hormone that helps maintain sex drive. Kramer posits that while the drugs may help with hair loss and alleviate urinary tract symptoms due to an enlarged prostate, the hormonal changes can also lead to the inability to get an erection.
Indeed, an online portal, the BBC Health, notes that around 70 per cent of impotence cases have medical causes and around 30 per cent have psychological causes. “Psychological and medical causes combined are responsible for the majority of cases,” the portal explains.
Hypertension
In addition, experts note that healthy blood vessels and sufficient blood flow are essential to getting and keeping an erection. However, they warn, uncontrolled hypertension damages blood vessels in the body, making them less elastic and less able to transport the same volume of blood quickly.
Again, experts say, stress, financial challenges and other psychological issues can cause ED.
The age factor
Olajire says biologically, testosterone, the principal male sex hormone, plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as the testes and prostate, as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as increased muscle and bone mass and hair growth.
Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology, Oladapo Ashiru, notes that as a man ages, however, testosterone decreases, causing changes in his sexuality. “This includes loss of libido and impotence, which can result in the inability to gain or sustain an erection,” he states.
He adds that testosterone is important in regulating the frequency and magnitude of penile erection, such that the younger a man is, the easier it is to achieve and keep an erection.
Underlying concerns
Researchers from Australian National University, in a recent study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, found that the more severe a man’s erectile dysfunction is, the greater his risk of being hospitalised for heart problems.
They suggest that erectile dysfunction may be a marker that signals underlying heart disease. “It has been hypothesised that atherosclerosis (plaque in the arteries that limits blood flow) might first manifest itself in smaller blood vessels, such as those in the penis,” the researchers say.
The way out
A pharmacist, Mr. Ola Ijimakin, notes that, for many men, the answer to impotence is as simple as taking a pill. “Getting more exercise, losing weight or stopping smoking may also help,” he adds.
He notes that a drug, such as Vigomax Forte, is a rational aphrodisiac formulation that is safe simply because it is non-hormonal, and it is known to increase sexual desire, while also correcting sexual weaknesses.
Physicians note that the efficacy of any effective ED drug is its ability to reduce performance-related anxiety, promote strength and stamina, while also increasing testosterone levels.

Eating carrot boosts sperm quality, fertility –Research

THERE has been a lot written about carrot, especially its beneficial effects as vision aider. But beyond its immense benefits to the eyes, carrot has been discovered to offer more health benefits to men than ever imagined in relation to their sexual activities. Jenny Hope of Daily Mail reports on the findings of a new research on the benefits of carrot on the human sperm.
Carrots have long been said to be good for your vision. Now, it has emerged, they can also improve the fertility of men.
Researchers investigating the effect of fruit and vegetables on the health of sperm discovered that carrots produced the best all-round results.
They had the greatest effect on ‘motility’ – a term used to describe the ability of sperm to swim towards an egg.
Researchers at Harvard University in the US asked almost 200 young men to follow diets containing a variety of fruit and veg before testing to see what effect it had on sperm.
Yellow and orange foods were found to help make the sperm stronger.
The boost was attributed to pigments called carotenoids because the body converts some of these into health-boosting antioxidants.
These include beta-carotene, which the body can make into the antioxidant vitamin A.
Antioxidants help to neutralise free radicals, destructive groups of atoms that are a by-product of metabolism and can damage cell membranes and DNA.
Sweet potato and melon can enhance the quantity and quality of sperm, but carrots were found to improve sperm performance by between 6.5 and 8 per cent, according to a report in the journal Fertility and Sterility.
Red fruit and veg, particularly tomatoes, which contain the anti-cancer chemical lycopene, were associated with fewer abnormally shaped sperm.
They contributed to between 8 and 10 per cent more ‘normal’ sperm, said the research, which could make a significant difference for couples having problems conceiving.
The report said: ‘In a population of healthy young men, carotenoid intake was associated with higher sperm motility and, in the case of lycopene, better sperm morphology.
‘Our data suggest that dietary carotenoids may have a positive impact on semen quality.’
It comes amid reports that the quantity and quality of male sperm is declining in Western countries, with some studies showing that average sperm counts have fallen by over half.
A previous study from Harvard showed that men eating diets containing most saturated fat had the lowest sperm counts and poorer quality sperm.
However, men who ate more ‘good’ fats – including omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and some plants – had better quality sperm than those eating less.
Carrots have long been prized for their proven ability to help maintain eye health.
They are a prime source of vitamin A, which the retina of the eye needs to function. The vitamin’s antioxidant properties may help prevent cataracts and a deficiency causes night blindness.
