Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr Fom Dakwak, last week, called for collaboration among doctors to improve healthcare delivery in the country.
Dr Dakwak, who made this call at the launching of Apollo Global Doctors Network- West Africa, in Lagos, said that only collaboration and exchange of ideas with medical experts from developed countries would boost the nation’s health sector.
While noting that the health sector was a dynamic sector with constant changes in technology and applications, he explained that Nigerian doctors, outside Nigeria, are performing well because they have facilities to work with.
Dakwak noted that the medical fraternity would make Nigeria a medical tourist centre and discourage brain drain in the health sector.
Dr Francis Faduyile, President, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos chapter also observed that the Apollo initiative was a wake-up call to Nigerian doctors to uphold their medical mandate of patient care.
Dr Faduyile urged medical practitioners to tap from their wealth of experience and apply same to improve healthcare delivery.
“We have the personnel but we still need to develop ourselves to become super medical specialists as obtained in India,“ he said.
Mr Jithu Jose, General Manager, Apollo Hospitals Group, said the initiative was triggered as a result of many Nigerians who had been travelling to India for treatment.
Mr Jose said that, as global healthcare provider, they want to help develop the healthcare services of developing countries, especially in Africa.
“We don’t want patients from Nigeria travelling far to get treatment. That is why we are launching this medical fraternity. To bring down our innovation and technologies to Nigeria and help develop her health sector,” he said.
The Global Doctors Network is an initiative of Apollo Hospitals Group based in India, launched to open a medical fraternity with doctors in Nigeria and other West African countries.
The initiative also aimed at sharing experiences on medical innovation and advanced medical research, access to world class clinical training and cutting-edge technologies geared towards quality patient care and saving lives.
